Revisiting "you know" and "I mean": some notes on the functions of the two pragmatic markers in contemporary spoken American English

Pragmatic markers
You know
I mean
American English
Formality
This article presents a corpus-based study of the pragmatic markers you know and I
mean in contemporary spoken American English. Previous research indicates that you know and I
mean are polysemous in their discourse roles, serving various functions in speech. By drawing on
tokens extracted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English, the Corpus of American
Soap Operas and the Corpus of Spoken, Professional American English, which include data from
text types differing on the scales of formality and spontaneity, the main aims are 1) to compare the
use of these two pragmatic markers and 2) to explore whether and how their behavior differs in
three text types: TV and radio programs, soap operas, and White House press conferences and
faculty/committee meetings. The results demonstrate that, despite overlapping in some of their
functions, you know and I mean cannot be used interchangeably in discourse. Additionally, the
functions of the two pragmatic markers vary significantly depending on the corpora, which is due
to the particular characteristics of the speech situations in which they are used.

Translation in the feminine: Theory, commitment and (good) praxis
Palacios González, Manuela
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Filoloxía Inglesa e Alemá
The gap between translation theory and practice can be narrowed by means of translators' self-reflections on their practice, although they need to acknowledge the specificity of their standpoint and avoid speaking from a transcendent position. This article engages in such self-reflective practice in order to denounce the strategies of stigmatization of feminist translation in the patriarchal defense of national culture and literary tradition. The nascent translation industry in Galicia is still marred by a bad praxis that exposes the power imbalance among the various actors involved in the translation process. Also, the introduction of the gender variable in the debate around the tensions between professional translators and amateurs reveals interesting loci of alternative practices. A plurality of translation actors, each of them enjoying some relative autonomy regarding their audience and objectives, seems more appropriate than a translation industry controlled by one, no matter how enlightened, single caucus

It is quite remarkable how Marlow’s recurrent characterisation of Kurtz as a spectre
in Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’ has passed almost unnoticed in the large body of
criticism on the novella. This essay interprets Marlow’s persistent expression of
loyalty to Kurtz’s ghost as the last in a series of ideological strategies that endow the
imperialist culture in which he is embedded with a minimum degree of consistency
that counterbalances the debilitating exposure of its evils. The ensuing pages develop
this central thesis concerning Kurtz’s ghostly status by drawing on Slavoj Žižek’s
Lacanian approach to the ideological function of the spectre, which allows the author
to diverge from other readings of ‘Heart of Darkness’ relevant to this topic. An
exploration of the logic of spectrality helps to explain why the novella falls short in its
indictment of imperialist ideology, a failure which, in the last instance, amounts to an
endorsement.

In this chapter I argue for a refinement of the classic SFL approach to lexical cohesion. First, a literature overview is provided in which key principles and related categories are examined. In addition, the connection of cohesion and discourse co-herence is addressed and an overview is provided of the wide range of applications that the former has in such fields as genre studies, language teaching and learning, psycholinguistics and computational linguistics, among others. The core SFL models of cohesion are then revisited in order to propose a modified taxonomy of lexical co-hesion, involving five distinct types (repetition, synonymy, opposition, inclusion and association) that are cross-classified by four kinds of distance-based ties (immediate, immediate-mediated, remote and remote-mediated). After this, the model is attested in the telephone conversation and broadcast discussion components of the International Corpus of English-Great Britain. The analysis of 10,042 cohesive ties reveals that repe-tition and association are the most frequently used lexical cohesion strategies across the two genres. They are overwhelmingly produced over speakers’ turns and remote-medi-ated ties. The results further indicate that lexical patterns collaborate in topic manage-ment, staging and turn-taking strategies

The fashion industry entails a system of production and consumption in which the exploitation of the environment, the exploitation of certain geographical areas and labour exploitation —mainly female labour—are inextricably interrelated. Drawing on an interdisciplinary methodology that combines ecofeminist studies and sociological approaches to fashion in a postcolonial context, this paper aims to examine the interrelationship between fashion, subalternity and ecology through a socio-literary analysis of Monica Ali's debut novel, Brick Lane(2003). As will be shown, Brick Laneweaves together the stories of several Spivakian subalterns who find in the current textile industry a source of empowerment while their bodies and the natural environment that surrounds them become a focus of overexploitation. With a setting that walks the reader from Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, to the London of sweatshops, Brick Laneoffers a subtle portrayal of the ambiguous relationship between fashion, female subalternity, and ecology on both sides of the East-West divide.

Muttering Contempt and Smiling Appreciation: Disentangling the History of the Reaction Object Construction in English

History of English
Structures such as “she muttered contempt” or “she smiled appreciation” have been referred to as Reaction Object Constructions (ROCs), and consist of a normally intransitive verb followed by an object that conveys an emotion, such that the whole construction can be paraphrased as “express an emotion by V-ing”. Although ROCs have been discussed recently in relation to Present Day English, from a historical perspective they have received very little attention, mentioned only in passing in historical reference grammars. This paper explores aspects of the history of ROCs, drawing on data from the Oxford English Dictionary and the Corpus of Late Modern English Texts, version 3.0. The findings show that, similarly to other processes of transitivisation such as the way-construction, ROCs have been in use since the fifteenth century, expanding to more verbs over the course of the Late Modern English period. More specifically, the data suggests that the construction was established mainly in the nineteenth century, a period in which those verbs attested in the construction became quite fashionable in novels. Findings are also subjected to a collexeme analysis, revealing the prototypical verbs of the construction during this period.

Teorizando o relato breve: tres achegas á crítica do xénero
Casado Villanueva, María
Narratoloxía
Teoría do relato
O presente artigo revisa tres obras publicadas nos últimos anos:
Contemporary Debates on the Short Story (2007), de José Ramón
Ibáñez, José Francisco Fernández e Carmen M. Bretones (eds.); The
Cambridge Introduction to the Short Story (2007), de Adrian
Hunter; e The Short Story. An Introduction (2009), de Paul March-
evocados polo relato fronte a teorías precedentes centradas
na súa unidade formal e conceptual e a súa vitalidade e
relevancia no panorama literario actual. Todos eles contribúen a

On English turn out and Spanish resultar mirative constructions. A case of ongoing grammaticalization?

This article focuses on the diachronic development of English turn out and Spanish
resultar ‘turn out’ mirative constructions. Having undergone processes of semantic
generalization over time, both verbs express evidential and, most prominently, mirative
nuances in the present-day languages. This study explores the mechanisms that
condition the evolution of turn out and resultar from their original meanings as lexical
resultative and change-of-state verbs towards their eventual subjectification and
grammaticalization as predicates conveying evidential and mirative senses. The
present-day mirative constructions take that- and infinitival complement clauses in both
languages. The analysis suggested here shows that both verbs exhibit diverging, though
closely related, paths and degrees of grammaticalization. Moreover, this study delves
into the further development of these predicates as parenthetical expressions. While
English parenthetical turns out has already been grammaticalized, Spanish resulta may
be on its way to becoming a grammaticalized parenthetical.

Contradiction and Ambivalence: Virginia Woolf's Aesthetic Experience in 'The Duchess and the Jeweller'

[EN]In the midst of the terror waged on Europe by Nazi demonstrations of power and racial extermination Virginia Woolf published a most contrevorsial short story -"The Duchess and the Jeweller" (1938)- which was originally entitled "The Duchess and the Jew" but was changed at the request of Woolf's American publisher for its racist connotations. The story has been neglected by the critics on account of two major reasons: on the one hand, it does not partake of those innovative narrative devices that most of Woolf's fiction presents; on the other such an apparently Anti-Semitist piece of work is inconveniently at odds with the oeuvre of a writer who so ardently and energetically rejected Fascism in her pamphlet Three Guineas which was curiously simultaneous in date of composition and publication to "The Duchess and the Jeweller". Despite the fact that Woolf may have been airing her personal prejudices of race and class in the characters of Oliver Bacon and the Duchess of Lambourne, the present paper does not aim to do away with such incoherence, ambivalence and contradiction, but rather focuses on the jewel imagery which structures the narrative and which addresses questions such as the 'art for art's sake' doctrine versus the material commodity of beauty
[GL]Na Europa asolagada pola guerra e polas demonstracións nazis de poder e exterminio racial, Virginia Woolf publica un controvertido relato, 'The Duchess and the Jeweller' (1938), orixinariamente titulado 'The Duchess and the Jew'[A Duquesa e o Xudeo], ainda que a autora o cambiou posteriormente a instancias do seu editor americano polas evidentes connocatións racistas do mesmo.

Ongoing semantic change in a modernizing society: A look at some adjectives from the olfactory domain in the Corpus of Historical American English

Extra-linguistic factors
As a diachronic corpus-based investigation into onomasiological variation, this study has
two main objectives. First, the paper analyses the evolution of the concept SWEETSMELLING as a whole, that is, as instantiated by the three near-synonymous adjectives,
fragrant, perfumed, and scented, with a focus on language-external pressures for
distributional changes. There seems to exist variation over time in the nouns that the
concept typically collocates with, going from nouns referring to entities with a natural
pleasant smell to entities with an artificial agreeable aroma. It is here argued that this
change is motivated by the social and technological transformations experienced by
American society after the First and Second Industrial Revolutions, a claim that finds
preliminary empirical support in the distribution from 1820 to 2009 of a series of lexical
indicators from the semantic domains CLEANING, COSMETICS, and TEXTILE & CLOTHING.
Second, the distribution over time of the three adjectives is examined. The data point to
a reorganization concerning the internal semantic structure of the synonym set, with
scented gaining ground at the expense of fragrant and perfumed in several contexts of
use. Additionally, the adjectives exhibit highly idiosyncratic collocational preferences,
which go a long way towards explaining the alternation between them.

Over the last decades, several studies have analyzed the collocational preferences of particular sets of near synonyms from a synchronic viewpoint, while their diachronic development has generally been disregarded. The aim of this paper is to partially fill this gap by examining the collocational behavior of the adjectives fragrant, perfumed, and scented, which denote the concept sweet smelling, over the time span 1810–2009. To this purpose, instances of the three near-synonyms and their L5–R5 collocates were extracted from the Corpus of Historical American English (COHA) and then submitted to statistical modeling. Results indicate that, at the beginning of the time span analyzed, the collocational preferences of scented and perfumed are very similar but, over time, scented becomes semantically closer to fragrant, while at the same time taking over some of its functions.

The aim of this paper is to provide a classification of multilingual and plurilingual electronic lexicographic resources which would enable, one the one hand, the implementation of quantitative and qualitative criteria to produce a typological taxonomy of lexicographical tools, such as dictionaries, as opposed to platforms and websites and, on the other, the distinction of multilingual and plurilingual resources in terms of their larger or lesser prototyping degree. In addition to offering a thorough description of the different resources, this paper also puts forward some parameters and typological proposals to define and
demarcate a number of electronic resources, particularly multilingual dictionaries and portals, while also outlining – and even questioning – the object of study of multilingual and plurilingual lexicography.

This paper discusses a case of constructional contamination (Pijpops and Van de Velde 2016; Pijpops et al. 2018), a phenomenon which describes the relation between two or more constructions such that usage frequencies of one construction influence the patterns of variation in another (Hilpert and Flach 2022). Specifically, I investigate the influence of structures of the type she gave a nod of intelligence or she nodded with satisfaction on the variation in the object slot of the so-called English Reaction Object Construction (ROC; Levin 1993), as in she nodded intelligence and she nodded satisfaction. Using the British Sentimental Novel Corpus (Ruano San Segundo and Bouso 2019) and the method of distinctive collexeme analysis (Gries and Stefanowitsch 2004; Hilpert 2006, 2014), it is argued that early and frequent structures superficially similar to the ROC, like those just mentioned, partly explain the lexical diversity found in the object slot of the nineteenth-century ROC (Bouso 2020b). The results thus corroborate findings on the pervasiveness of constructional contamination in English syntax, confirm the claim put forward in Bouso (2021) that the ROC can be treated as an example of a multiple source construction, and provide evidence of the large-scale transitivisation process experienced by the English language since Old English times.
(ROC, Levin 1993; e.g. she nodded intelligence, she nodded satisfaction). A través
2019) y varios análisis colostruccionales (Gries y Stefanowitsch 2004; Hilpert
antiguo.

Hierarchical Configural Frequency Analysis
This paper presents a diachronic analysis of the attributive uses of four synonymous adjectives which designate the concept of sweet-smelling (fragrant, perfumed, scented, and sweet-smelling) in the latter part of Late Modern and Present-day American English. By drawing on data from the Corpus of Historical American English (COHA) and applying a Hierarchical Configural Frequency Analysis (HCFA), it delineates the internal semantic structure of this set of synonyms, paying special attention to their noun collocates. The results show that the concept of sweet-smelling experiences major changes over the time span examined (1850–2009), from being used mostly to qualify entities which can exhibit a natural pleasant smell (e.g. flowers and trees) to modifying objects which are artificially sweet-smelling (e.g. oils and shampoos). Moreover, fragrant and perfumed, which initially were the most frequent adjectives, are gradually replaced by scented, thus reflecting a change in the relation between the synonyms over time. The study constitutes the first diachronic approximation to synonymy from the perspective of cognitive semantics and provides equally effective results as previous synchronic research in the field.

The class of English verbs of Desire in Present-Day English comprises verbs such as long or thirst, several of which are attested in earlier English in impersonal constructions characterised by the lack of a grammatical subject. In English, the impersonal construction decreased in frequency between 1400 and 1500, and effectively went out of use during the sixteenth century. Previous research has suggested that there is a need for a corpus-based study of not just Middle English, but also Early Modern English, in order to explore the different path(s) of development followed by individual impersonal verbs. The present article, therefore, investigates the development of the impersonal verb long (< OE langian) with the following objectives: a) to determine when long ceases to occur in impersonal constructions; b) to provide a diachronic overview of the personal syntactic patterns that came to replace impersonal constructions in Early Modern English; and c) to identify, within the framework of Construction Grammar, factors that may account for the development of long as a prepositional verb.

This paper delves into the structure and motivations of blending by reporting on the results of the analysis of a corpus of 80 blends gathered from the field of videogaming. The starting point will be a multidimensional description based on a set of parameters and values drawn on previous works by, among others, Kemmer (2003), Ronneberger-Sibold (2006) and Mattiello (2013). In accordance with the principles of Prototype Theory (Lakoff 1987; Langacker 1987), the combination of values displayed by the items results in an overall degree of typicality and will allow their location in the centre or the periphery of the category. The theoretical framework will be put into practice in the analysis of a corpus of blends naming videogames. Most of them are found to be prototypical items, the most common type being the so-called “overlapping” blend (Splatoon: splat + platoon). Lastly, concerning the motivations for the creation of blends in this particular field, these items succeed in economically capturing key features of the game so as to awaken the interest of potential buyers. Moreover, blends anticipate the humorous, puzzling or creative qualities of the game they name and wink at the players’ inventiveness to work out rules.

The notion of “New Sincerity” has become central to the study of David Foster Wallace's prose over the years. The present article explores how the tonal arrangement that characterises the movement has lived on to influence contemporary art, examining Bo Burnham's popular comedy musicals as a notable example of this influence. Wallace and Burnham's common stance concerning cultural reception is argued to be indissociable from their socio-cultural setting, with the two authors articulating parallel responses to an ongoing, multifaceted process of massification of public opinion, as well as to the consequences to cultural poiesis therein entailed.

This paper explains on the basis of a set of examples different scenarios
that point out the importance of the correct acquisition and development of the
lexicographical competences in the teaching and learning context of a foreign
language, in this case, German as a foreign language. For this purpose, three
basic competences are selected: the selection of the appropriate lexicographic
work according to the communicative situation, the search and selection of the
equivalent in the context of L2 reception and L2 translation and the selection
and use of the equivalent in L2 in the context of production and translation
in L2. The aim will be to highlight the need for a clearer identification of the
lexicographical information relating to the form, meaning and use of the searched
word both in the reception and production situation in L2 and in the context of
the translation from and to L2. For this purpose, it is essential to emphasize the
role of the dictionary as a consultation and learning tool, not only to identify the
explicit information in the lexicographical article

Analogy-driven change: the emergence and development of mirative end up constructions in American English

End up
Mirativity
Analogy
Parentheticals
Cooptation
This article explores the diachronic development of mirative end up in American English, which emerged in the late nineteenth century and which seems to be, at present, in the process of becoming a parenthetical element. The rise of the various mirative end up constructions is argued to be the result of both pragmatic enrichment and paradigmatic analogy, motivated by a series of semantically and formally related expressions, most prominently by mirative turn out. Moreover, the article delves into the process of cooptation to explain the emergence of parenthetical instances in the present-day language. Cooptation is understood as an intrinsically analogical-driven mechanism when it entails the eventual grammaticalization of formulaic parenthetical constructions. Data for the present study were taken from a variety of diachronic and synchronic sources, which include COHA, COCA and NOW, among others.

The present article analyses the literary motif of the whale in Galician and Irish contemporary poetry and
makes use of an ecofeminist frame that brings together recent debates in ecocriticism and feminism. The analysis of the
interrelated oppression of women and nature leads us to appraise the motif of the whale beyond the trope of feminine
empowerment so as to estimate the effect of the cetaceans’ extinction and the role of whaling fisheries from Galicia and
Ireland. Contemporary poetry in these two communities puts forward figurative transgeneses of whales and humans
so that we may not forget our animal nature and may recognise the other inside us. We find that this poetry deprecates
phenomena such as the spectacularization of nature and the exploitation of its resources to the point of extermination, and promotes instead empathy and respect for the other’s
relative difference. This article also discusses the different
use of the motif of the whale in each literary system,
both regarding its visibility and its more or less ecological
or allegorical dimension

Internetlexikographie
an DICONALE herauszuarbeiten

This article explores the prominence of the body in Janice Galloway‟s short fiction. Drawing mainly on Kristeva‟s notions of the semiotic and the abject, the argument initially establishesthe central place ofphysicality in Galloway‟s poetics. Her creative project is inspired by a desire to transmit in writing the experience of being alive, of howbeing is intrinsically fragile, inexorably bound to extinction. In a particularly sharp manner that engages the reader more actively than her novels, her short stories exhibit both formally and thematically an interaction of the symbolic and the semiotic. As being attentive to life entails an awareness of death if one is to write realistically, the ensuing discussion of stories from her three collections –Blood (1991), Where you find it (1996) and Jellyfish (2015)–reveals that abjection, the extreme version of the semiotic that threatens to cancel out the symbolic, is paramount in her creative universe.

The article focuses on the LeGeDe third-party funded project and the corpus-based lexicographic prototype on the particularities of spoken German in interaction developed during the project period. The development of a lexicographic resource of this kind builds on the various experiences in the creation of corpus-based online dictionaries (especially at the Leibniz Institute for the German Language, Mannheim) and on methods of corpus-based lexicology as well as interaction analysis. As a multimedia prototype for the corpus-based lexicographic treatment of spoken language phenomena, it occupies an innovative position in the landscape of online lexicography. In the section on the presentation of the LeGeDe-project, the article deals in detail with research questions relevant to the project, the project goals, the corpus data basis and empirically determined expectations of a resource on spoken German. The presentation of the complex structure of the LeGeDe-prototype is illustrated with numerous examples. Apart from the central information on the macro- and microstructure and the lexicographical outer texts, the various linking and access structures are shown. In addition to the final conclusion, the article concludes with an outlook that provides extensive suggestions for future lexicographic work with spoken language corpus data

A syntactic and pragmatic study of nominal vocatives in the Twitter exchanges of rappers’ fans

Twitter
Nominal vocatives
Address terms
Computer-mediated communication
Digital genres
This study aims to examine nominal vocatives in Twitter through the analysis of 1500 posts extracted from the accounts of five well-known female and male rappers. From this total, a sample of 550 vocatives were analysed. Attention is paid to their frequency, class, position, type of clause and the polarity in which they occur, and the pragmatic functions they express. The factor of gender is also investigated. The analysis reveals that those posting to these Twitter accounts make use of a very large and varied repertoire of nominal vocatives. The group of familiarisers clearly prevails over other categories of vocatives and this high frequency of familiarisers contrasts to the situation in spontaneous conversations where first names tend to be the most common. Vocatives in final position clearly prevail over initial and medial position. Besides, Twitter posts containing nominal vocatives in final position tend to be short while those in initial position are far longer. Polarity does not seem to have a strong influence. Some differences, however, are also observed according to the use of nominal vocatives with respect to gender. As in spontaneous conversation, vocatives in Twitter generally serve to strengthen social relationships (creating solidarity, complimenting, expressing appreciation, reinforcing the group identity) while discourse-oriented functions relating to topic and turn management are not so common

The Image of Ireland in Iberian Galicia in the Early Twentieth Century
MacCarthy, Anne
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Filoloxía Inglesa e Alemá
In her article "The Image of Ireland in Iberian Galicia in the Early Twentieth Century," Anne
MacCarthy explores Galician intellectuals' relationship with Ireland in their attempt to create a Celtic
imaginary for Galicia which would act as a cultural fortification in the face of centralizing forces of
Castilian Spain. In periodicals prominent in the 1920s, Nós and A Nosa Terra, the wish to construct a
separate identity for Galicia, apart from Spain, is often expressed and embodied in reference to
Ireland. Whereas the interest in Ireland was increased by the struggle for independence in that
country at the time, the basis for the similarities found between the two cultures was mythical and
imaginary.

Pronoun omission and agreement: An analysis based on ICE Singapore and ICE India
Tamaredo Meira, Iván
Fanego Lema, María Teresa
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Filoloxía Inglesa e Alemá
This article deals with pronoun omission in subject position and its connection
with subject-verb agreement in Indian English and Singapore English. Agreement
morphology has been found to be a predictor and facilitator of pronoun
omission cross-linguistically in that it aids in the identification and retrieval of
the referents of omitted pronouns. The results of a corpus study partly confirm
this trend, since they show that agreement morphology does have a weak facilitating
effect in both varieties examined; that is, pronoun omission increases
when the subject and the verb agree in person and number. However, this is only
true for lexical verbs; non-modal auxiliaries (i.e., be, have, do), on the contrary,
show a low percentage of omitted pronouns and no facilitating effect of agreement
morphology. To account for this finding, the possible inhibiting effect on
pronoun omission of the frequency of co-occurrence of pronouns and non-modal
auxiliaries was also explored.

The growth of the transitivising Reaction Object Construction
Bouso, Tamara
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Filoloxía Inglesa e Alemá
Reaction Object Construction
Transitivising construction
Polysemous construction
Constructionalisation
History of English
This paper explores the growth of the Reaction Object Construction (ROC) as in Pauline smiled her thanks, offering new insights into its characterisation and historical development from the perspective of Construction Grammar (Goldberg 1995, 2006, 2019) and its application to patterns of language change (Hilpert 2013; Traugott & Trousdale 2013). It is argued that the modern ROC qualifies as a traditional form-meaning pairing and, at a deeper level, as a polysemous construction that follows the path of development of other transitivising constructions such as the way-construction (Israel 1996), and of processes of constructionalisation in general. Once the ROC imposes a coreferential constraint on its object argument, acquiring in this way its status as a form-meaning pairing over the Early Modern English period (1500–1700), the construction increases its productivity and schematicity; at the same time it decreases its compositionality since the link between the form/syntax and the overall meaning of the construction becomes less transparent, as in The door jingled a welcome. The ROC can thus be argued to be part and result of a broader development in the grammar of English, namely the historical trend towards transitivisation.

Parody and metafiction: Virginia Woolf 's 'An Unwritten Novel'
Lojo Rodríguez, Laura María
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Filoloxía Inglesa e Alemá
Metafiction
Virginia Woolf
Short fiction
The present article aims at vindicating the dimension where Virginia Woolf was more overtly «metafictional»: the practice of some of her short fiction. According to her, this was a new genre freed from the realist conventions that had modelled the novel from its inception as a literary form. Such an attitude is openly at work in «An Unwritten Novel» (1920), a short piece which parodies realism by laying bare the functioning of its conventions while opening the way to new fictional modes of understanding literature. «An Unwritten Novel» draws attention to itself and to its process of construction, laying bare its self-reflecting mechanisms which so ostensibly oppose realism.

In the past two decades, more and more dictionary usage studies have been published, but most of them deal with questions related to what users appreciate about dictionaries, which dictionaries they use and what type of information they need in specific situations — presupposing that users actually consult lexicographic resources. However, language teachers and lecturers in linguistics often have the impression that students do not use enough high-quality dictionaries in their everyday work. With this in mind, we launched an international cooperation project to collect empirical data to evaluate what it is that students actually do while attempting to solve language problems. To this end, we applied a new methodological setting: screen recording in conjunction with a thinking-aloud task. The collected empirical data offers a broad insight into what users really do while they attempt to solve language-related tasks online.

A construction of independent means: the history of the Way construction revisited

The emergence and development of the Way construction was famously examined by
Israel (1996) in a study which traced the modern form of the construction to three
senses or subschemas, namely manner of motion (He stumbled his way to the front
door), means of motion (He dug his way out of the prison) and incidental activity (He
whistled his way out of the room). The present article moves beyond the late Middle
English period – the starting point of Israel’s research – and looks at the precursors
of the Way construction since Old English times, as well as its interaction with the
Intransitive Motion construction (IMC) (He walked into the room). By approaching the
data in terms of Goldberg’s typology (1997) of verb-construction relationships, which is
finer-grained than Israel’s tripartite division, the analysis identifies the areas of conceptual
and constructional overlap that have existed between the Way construction and the IMC
in the course of history, and shows that the Way construction has gradually specialised
in the expression of those relations which could not be readily coded in the IMC, such
as means of motion and incidental activity. The study thus seeks to contribute to a better
understanding of how the constructicon, the repertory of constructions making up the
grammar of a language, may change over time.

The analysis of existing bilingual lexicographical works for German and
Spanish confirmed us the necessity to develop a dictionary with a novel approach,
with which the user could receive a more tailored information to his needs, in
case to produce texts in the respective foreign languages and which allows him to
select a particular lexeme from the variety of possible lexicalizations, taking into
account the diversity in their use. Based on this assumption, the contribution
presents, on the one hand, the theoretical and methodological aspects, and on the
other hand, some exemplary results of the lexicographical DICONALE online
project. This is an ongoing project for the development of a modular bilingual
and bidirectional dictionary with a conceptual onomasiological focus and
online access. This dictionary is intended to be a tool in the production process
of the foreign languages German and Spanish (DaF / ELE), in the translation
of both by a range of possible lexicalized forms of certain mental concepts and
in the achievement of relevant lexicological information to its correct use. The
contribution will focus, for example, on some issues concerning the structure
of DICONALE on a medium and micro level, and on several description
modules. In the following, the four main pillars concerning the type of users, the
onomasiological conception, the empirical data, the description model and the
contrastive point of view will be presented and exemplified

Lexicografía
The aim of this paper is to discuss valency dictionaries and their main defining features. In order to describe this dictionary type, the analysis takes the inventory of valency dictionaries as a starting point. A set of criteria are then discussed as possible characteristic properties of this type of dictionaries. That is, the intention is to find out what makes valency dictionaries the way they are. The overarching goal is to achieve not only a more accurate description of the current situation of valency lexicography, but also to provide a clearer definition of this class of syntagmatic dictionaries. Furthermore, some open questions are addressed and new developments suggested. Finally, their suitability for their target users’ needs is also discussed.

This study compares Hispanic and Anglo-Saxon regulatory sources governing the crime of
giving false testimony during a trial in the medieval period. In the Hispanic sphere reference is made to precedents in Roman Law, emphasising which elements constituted a crime and the punishments applicable under the public authority in place at the time. For the medieval period, the paper puts forward a parallel diachronic comparative study method of Hispanic and Anglo-Saxon regulatory sources. To do this, the study follows a periodization of four stages in history (early and late High and Low Middle Ages respectively), setting out both the shared and particular elements of criminal law in place forregulating crime for each stage. The study analyses the object and subjects of the crime of false testimony both in secular and canonical law. The paper discusses jurisdictional litigation, especially in English territories, taking place between the secular and ecclesiastical power to bring the perjurer to trial and apply the punishment set out in canonical or secular law. The discussion also looks at which legal interest was really being protected in these cases, whether divine authority, the victim or the correct administration of justice. This leads to an examination of the
legal standing for pursuing the crime and the types of punishments set out in secular canonical law to
watch over the protected asset. In the Hispanic sphere, Visigoth legislation is used in the High Medieval period and local and territorial law codes in the Lower Middle Ages, whereas in the Anglo-Saxon context, the legislative gap was filled by the compendia of Common Law (especially Britton and the Mirror of Justices), legal doctrine of the time and forensic practice recorded in the Year Books in respect of this crime

The Staging of Calderón’s Theatre

Escenografía
Scenography
Calderón de la Barca
In this chapter we shall focus on specific aspects of th is scenography, relying on evidence taken both from indications left by the dramatist in the play-texts themselves and from other related documents that explain the use of materials or strategies for performance. Long neglected by scholars, who largely saw theatre as dramatic poetry whose essence was to be found in the text, scenography has more recently been accorded a greater importance, justified by the pre-eminence of the visual in contemporary culture, an importance that risks, it must be said, the opposite bias, exaggerating the significance of staging in the analysis of theatrical works. Studying staging in Calderon necessitates an explanation of Spanish Golden Age drama in the round since, within each genre and each dramatic mode,
Calderon exhibits an exceptional command of scenography.

This article aims at examining Daisy Johnson’s collection of short stories Fen (2016) and, most particularly, its opening piece “Starver”, through the lens of posthuman feminism by arguing that Johnson’s collection puts forward a relational ontology which refuses to consider human subjectivity as exclusively restricted to the confines of human bodies by blurring traditional boundaries as constitutive of oppositions such as nature/culture, human/non-human, male/female, which have traditionally articulated anthropocentric worldviews. Johnson’s focus on the English Fenlands as a borderline, liminal topology mirrors contemporary preoccupations with the porosity and instability of allegedly firm borders and, by extension, of identity. Johnson’s collection ultimately interrogates the relationship between individuals and their environment, radically distressed by human intervention and capitalist consumerism, thus heading to the “sixth extinction” of the Anthropocene.

The mark on the wall" (1917)

Results show that, from a semantic perspective, the verb hunger undergoes a process of metaphorical extension involving a change from the original meaning ‘to feel hunger’, in the domain of Physical Sensation, to the meaning ‘to desire’, in the domain of Emotion. In this latter sense, the verb becomes predominantly associated with prepositional complements (e.g. 1542, our hungry soules [...] hunger for y^ word of God). Also in the course of the Early Modern period, the verb is subject to competition with the adjectival periphrasis be hungry, especially in the sense ‘to feel hunger’. The article concludes by putting forward hypotheses to explain the motivations for these various developments.

Probabilistic indigenization
Alternation-internal homogeneity
Szmrecsanyi et al. (2016) define probabilistic indigenization as the process whereby probabilistic constraints shape variation patterns in different ways, which eventually leads to more heterogeneity in the constraints governing syntactic variation across different varieties of English. The present study extends our knowledge of the heterogeneity of probabilistic grammars by sketching a corpus-based variationist method for calculating the similarity between varieties thereby drawing inspiration from the comparative sociolinguistics literature. Based on linguistic material from the International Corpus of English, we ascertain the degree of regional variability of five probabilistic constraints on the genitive, dative, particle placement and subject pronoun omission alternations across three varieties of English, namely British, Indian and Singapore English. Our results indicate that, of the four alternations under study, the genitive alternation is the most homogeneous one from a regional perspective, followed – in increasing order of heterogeneity – by subject pronoun omission, dative and particle placement alternations. On the basis of these findings, we evaluate claims in the literature according to which the extent of probabilistic indigenization is proportional to the lexical specificity of the syntactic phenomenon under study, a hypothesis that is borne out by our data.

The role of experience in syntactic processing: a critical view from the linguistics building

Syntactic processing

Linguists with an interest in psycholinguistic research on the processing of language often feel concerned
that psycholinguistic experiments truly reflect important aspects of the nature of language and not artefactual
dimensions of the methodologies used in them. In this paper I intend to argue that one of the main theories
of language comprehension, Tuning, is flawed precisely because the theory has virtually no connection
with the world of linguistics. If my view is correct, information about language obtained within the Tuning
paradigm is therefore unlikely to reflect truly significant aspects of the nature of language. Tuning is
premised on the role played by frequency in many cognitive domains, including the processing of language.
It claims that ambiguous sentences are processed initially by preferring more frequent syntactic trees over
less frequent ones. A prerequisite to the verificability of the theory is that its corpus analyses be wellfounded.
Another is that the theory spell out precisely what counts as a segment subject to frequency
effects. I intend to argue that these two prerequisites are not adequately controlled by the proponents of
the model

Revisiting you know and I mean: Some notes on the functions of the two pragmatic markers in contemporary spoken American English

Formality
This article presents a corpus-based study of the pragmatic markers you know and I mean in contemporary spoken American English. Previous research indicates that you know and I mean are polysemous in their discourse roles, serving various functions in speech. By drawing on tokens extracted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English, the Corpus of American Soap Operas and the Corpus of Spoken, Professional American English, which include data from text types differing on the scales of formality and spontaneity, the main aims are 1) to compare the use of these two pragmatic markers and 2) to explore whether and how their behavior differs in three text types: TV and radio programs, soap operas, and White House press conferences and faculty/committee meetings. The results demonstrate that, despite overlapping in some of their functions, you know and I mean cannot be used interchangeably in discourse. Additionally, the functions of the two pragmatic markers vary significantly depending on the corpora, which is due to the particular characteristics of the speech situations in which they are used

Michèle Roberts’s ‘Charity’ —published in her first collection of short fiction During Mother’s
Absence (1994)— fictionalises a woman’s attempt to come to terms with the figure of her own
mother in order to recover the maternal body as paradise. In discursive terms, this process of
reconsideration, forgiveness and recovery is achieved by the character’s enactment of her own
perspective as a child, dependant on language, memory, and mythic reconstructions of her own
past. This article examines the complex terms of the mother-daughter relationship in Roberts’s
short story, which offers an interesting feminist permutation of the traditional male pattern of
maturation —or Oedipus complex— by exclusively focusing on the mother-daughter dyad.
Furthermore, Robert’s short story offers a psychoanalytically-inspired example of maternal
splitting into the spiritual and the eroticised mother, which the narrator will learn to reconcile
as she enters the threshold of maturity.

A Perfect Poem?: History, Meaning and Influences in John Keats’s “To Autumn”

This article seeks to consider different interpretations and meanings of Keats’s “To Autumn”, the last of the great odes, written on 19th September 1819. Among English Romantic poetry texts, this composition offers a serene description, although there are critics who have highlighted its ideological overtones. We intend to analyze the sense of each stanza, identifying the influences on the text. In spite of the fact that the reader can see that the word ‘ode’ is not present explicitly in the title, this is not a problem, since there can be no doubt that we must understand this composition as such, and it has even been considered to be a perfect work. Having studied the structure and the relationship between “To Autumn” and Keats’s Spring Odes, especially “Ode on a Grecian Urn”, it seems necessary to resolve the ambiguity that is documented throughout the poem. Recalling that the composition suggests, or at least tries to show, a revival of nature, there is some degree of frustration, as Winter symbolizes death, while the ‘poetic ego’ desires to believe in a season that is still remote.

This article examines the historical development of the VVingOBL construction, as exemplified by “Jane came whistling down the street” or “She went walking up the field path,” where an intransitive motion verb is followed by a present participle and an oblique complement. The analysis looks at the precursors of the construction since Old English and argues that the sharp rise in productivity of the VVingOBL construction, especially from the second half of the nineteenth century, is interrelated with changes affecting English motion vocabulary in Early and Late Modern English and also the increase in frequency of the be progressive over the same period. By the twentieth century, the VVingOBL construction had settled into its modern form, namely a deictic-directional construction with either come or go in the V slot. The article also considers indices of the advancing grammaticalization of the construction. It concludes by discussing whether its morphosyntactic and semantic properties support considering it as a serial verb construction, a hypothesis briefly raised in work by Goldberg (2006:52)

Virginia Woolf's 'Monday or Tuesday': An Approach
Lojo Rodríguez, Laura María

Virginia Woolf
Monday or Tuesday
Short fiction
In 1921, Virginia Woolf publishes a collection of short stories entitled Monday or Tuesday which comprised different impressions of the everyday life, or the life of Monday or Tuesday. "Monday or Tuesday", the story which gives title to the collection seems to mark a borderline as far as technical experimentation is concerned as well as a point of inflection in Woolfs literary career. The story is the literary reflection ofWoolfs concems with literature, explicitly posed in her essay "Modern Fiction" (1919): at this point, Woolf started to experiment with the fragmentation of the subject by means of achieving different perspectives offered from a multiplicity of angles and filtered through voice and vision, through language and imagery, through words, elements which convey beauty in themselves

This paper looks at Terry Eagleton’s engagement with Freudian psychoanalysis. We start by looking at Eagleton’s increasing interest in psychoanalysis in the late 1970s, particularly in “Marx, Freud and Morality” (1977). We then move on to three crucial topics that Eagleton tackles by resorting to psychoanalysis: work, love and reason. In each of these three cases we present the ways in which Eagleton posits psychoanalysis as a plausible complement to Marxism, even where their compatibility is not immediately evident. Our reading is intended to be descriptive; however, it does not shy away from pointing out the inconsistencies that we have found in Eagleton’s use and assessment of psychoanalysis. In the case of work, we address the relevance of Freud’s view of it as inherently unpleasant in connection with the Marxian concept of alienated labour. Regarding love, we discuss Eagleton’s focus on love understood as agape rather than the Freudian conception of love as eros. As far as reason is concerned, we deal with Freud’s faith in the intellect and in science as the sole safeguards of humankind against the assaults of the superego.

integration of corpus linguistics and grammaticalization theory, two subfields
which, despite sharing considerable common ground, tended to remain as
separate areas of linguistic analysis until quite recently. Making use of diachronic

contribute to our understanding of grammaticalization and related processes
of language change. The selected case studies deal with the origin of existential

Where does lexical diversity come from? Horizontal interaction in the network of the Late Modern English Reaction Object Construction

This paper provides further insight into the Reaction Object Construction (she nodded intelligence) as a case of constructional contamination, a phenomenon that describes the relation between two or more constructions such that usage frequencies of one construction influence the patterns of variation in another one (Pijpops and Van de Velde 2016). Earlier research has shown that the frequencies of structures of the type she gave a nod of intelligence explain part of the lexical diversity that is found in the object slot of the nineteenth-century British ROC. These findings are now contrasted with American data to explore whether the phenomenon has gone beyond British English and, if so, examine how this is manifested in diachrony. The results show clear similarities with the British data, confirming that horizontal interaction in the network of the Late Modern English ROC played a role in the diverse configuration of this construction.

'A New Tradition': Virginia Woolf and the Personal Essay

Virginia Woolf
Writer
Essay
Virginia Woolf's fairly gained prestige as a novelist has tended to eclipse the fact that for more than two decades of her professional life -from 1904 to 1922- she was primarily a reviewer and essayist. These literary manifestations have been most often regarded by the critics as secondary or incidental to the rest of her oeuvre. The present paper aims to vindicate the relevance of the essay as part of Virginia Woolf's artistic genius, and develops a two-fold argument: on the one hand, the importance of the essay in the consolidation of Woolf as a professional writer; on the other, the substantial contributions which Woolf made to the genre, which resulted in the invention of a new genre, namely the "personal" essay.
In her essays Woolf reformulated the positivist conception of authorship and readership, rejecting a position of power and authority on the critic's side. Moreover Woolf challenged the traditional definition of the essay as expository prose in favour of a flexible form particularly suited to express personal opinion and thus to encompass the multiplicity of human experience. Such arguments were largely to influence Woolf's perception of the relation between creative writing and the essay, as well as to contribute to the modification of the latter in the direction of narrative

This paper explores the writing of students at British universities, considering both L1 and L2
speakers of English. Our aim is to identify university students‟ most common errors and areas of difficulty with respect to 1) grammar, 2) spelling, and 3) punctuation. For our purposes, we analysed samples of writing collected at University College London and we identified and examined frequent problems in native and non-native university student‟s writing. Our findings report that university students make twice the number of errors in punctuation compared to grammar or spelling; and that their typology of errors is very heterogeneous, showing differences between English L1 and L2 university students in terms of the types of errors they commit

This article deals with the Reaction Object Construction (ROC), as in She smiled disbelief, where an intransitive verb (smile), by adding an emotional object (disbelief), acquires the extended sense “express X by V−ing” (i.e. “She expressed disbelief by smiling”). Earlier research has suggested a diachronic connection between the ROC and Direct Discourse Constructions (DDCs) of the type She smiled, “I don’t believe you” (Visser 1963–1973). More recently, Bouso (2018) has shown that the ROC is primarily a feature of 19th century narrative fiction. This paper aims to bring together these insights. On the basis of a self-compiled corpus and De Smet’s Corpus of English Novels, it investigates the productivity of the ROC in 19th and 20th century fiction, and the role of DDCs in its development. The results reveal a peak in the productivity of the ROC that coincides with the development of the sentimental novel, and a correlation between the development of the ROC on the one hand and of those DDCs that have been mistakenly hypothesised to be its single source constructions on the other. Extravagance is proposed as a triggering factor for the use of the ROC in the 19th century as an alternative to DDCs.

This paper considers pronoun omission in different varieties of English. It argues
that omitted pronouns simplify structures if their referents are accessible in
discourse, which explains the greater frequency of this grammatical feature in
high-contact varieties of English, spoken in speech communities with a history
of high numbers of second-language users. A corpus study of two high-contact
varieties, Indian English and Singapore English, and a low-contact one, British
English, is conducted in order to examine the distribution of omitted and overt
pronouns. As expected, pronoun omission is more frequent in the high-contact
varieties than in British English. Moreover, pronouns are omitted almost exclusively
when they have highly accessible referents as antecedents, which is not a
conventionalized feature of the grammars of Indian or Singapore English, where
overt pronouns are the default choice when referring to antecedents

The posthumanist paradigm of the last three decades has brought about a transformation in what we understand as “human”, and its postanthropocentric proposals —common to posthumanist and ecocritical debates— have called for a radical revision of the relationship between culture and nature and have fostered bonds of continuity between these (Braidotti and Dolphijn). The current article focuses on the relationship of continuity between humans and animals in contemporary Irish and Galician poetry, and in particular on the motif of the whale, in that such continuity illustrates the emergent configurations of female subjectivity produced in these two Atlantic communities of Western Europe since the 1990s

This article aims to delve into the gendered nature of Mary O’Malley’s and Marga do Val’s poetry on displacement and migration, so as
to assess the female subject’s questioning of notions such as home, belonging, mobility and otherness. In spite of these writers’ different
national and cultural backgrounds, the common history of massive emigration from Galicia and Ireland allows us to hypothesize that
their poetry and contemporary reflections on displacement are mutually relevant, as former research on Irish and Galician women’s
mobility has indicated (Lorenzo-Modia 2016, Acuña 2014). As each writer is analysed, their most significant and germane propositions
are identified. This allows us to conclude that there is a will to connect the theme of migration to the writers’ autobiographical experience
of mobility and that O’Malley and do Val are thoroughly aware of the relation between past and present flows of emigration and
immigration.
A medida

Towards the Description of a Multi-sided Prototype Concept in Multilingual Automatic Language Generation: From Corpus via Word Embeddings to the Automatic Dictionary. The multilingual dictionary of noun valency Portlex is considered to be the trigger for the creation of the automatic language generators Xera and Combinatoria, whose development and use is presented in this paper. Both prototypes are used for the automatic generation of nominal phrases with their mono- and bi-argumental valence slots, which could be used, among others, as dictionary examples or as integrated components of future autonomous E-Learning-Tools. As samples for new types of automatic valency dictionaries including user interaction, we consider the language generators as we know them today. In the specific methodological procedure for the development of the language generators, the syntactic-semantic description of the noun slots turns out to be the main focus from a syntagmatic and paradigmatic point of view. Along with factors such as representativeness, grammatical correctness, semantic coherence, frequency and the variety of lexical candidates, as well as semantic classes and argument structures, which are fixed components of both resources, a concept of a multi-sided prototype stands out. The combined application of this prototype concept as well as of word embeddings together with techniques from the field of automatic natural language processing and generation (NLP and NLG) opens up a new way for the future development of automatically generated plurilingual valency dictionaries. All things considered, the paper depicts the language generators both from the point of view of their development as well as from that of the users. The focus lies on the role of the prototype concept within the development of the resources.

Two empirical studies were carried out in the project „Lexik des gesprochenen Deutsch” (LeGeDe) at the Institute for the German Language (IDS) in
Mannheim. The main goal of these studies was to shed light on people’s expectations of the planned lexicographical online-resource. In the first study, selected
experts were interviewed in the form of a guided interview. In the second study, a
broader online survey was conducted, which should reach a wider range of
potential users. This contribution introduces the basic concepts of the project
LeGeDe, outlines the two studies and presents selected results on four subject
blocks: (i) sociodemographic data, (ii) personal use of (online) dictionaries, (iii)
individual experience with the lexis of spoken language and (iv) expectations
concerning a lexicographical online-resource for spoken German

Adding annotation and mark-up to linguistic corpora has become a standard practice in corpus
building over the past few decades as a way to facilitate data extraction and at the same time
guarantee that new corpora are compatible with existing and future tools. The purpose of this
article is twofold. First, we provide an overview of the main forms of annotation and mark-up
available to the research community and how they have been applied to the Corpus of Historical
English Law Reports 1535-1999 (CHELAR), a specialized corpus consisting of law reports or
records of judicial decisions. Second, we give an account of preliminary research based on the
annotated versions of CHELAR, which so far has been primarily aimed at identifying the
distinctive linguistic characteristics of law reports, as well as at investigating how the language
of law reports has evolved over a time span of almost five centuries. Our article illustrates the
multiple advantages of applying a simple annotation schema to a corpus and how this can
enhance the potential of a corpus for historical genre analysis.

This paper deals with several aspects of context in lexicography. Section 1 briefly mentions some different approaches to the concept context in various fields. Section 2 puts the focus on different uses and perceptions of the concept context in lexicography, contrasting it with related concepts, such as cotext, contextualization and contextual information. A more comprehensive discussion also covers different aspects of the occurrence of the concept context in dictionary research, with specific reference to central aspects of the so-called inner and outer context. Various portals, dictionaries and dictionary entries will illustrate the
above-mentioned approaches. Section 3 approaches the subject from a user perspective. Section 4 addresses the question How can contextual data be extracted or generated? To answer this question, some methods and tools for (automatic) acquisition and analysis of contextual data, – in particular of the local contextual data in terms of Faber and León-Araúz (2016) – are introduced. Examples of these are lexical databases or semantic networks, like WordNet, and corpora, like Sketch Engine, or predictive methods, like Word2vec and similar ones. Some advantages and disadvantages of specific data acquisition tools used for the analysis of local contextual data are indicated. This section also contributes to a more detailed discussion of the automatic generation of the so-called local syntactic-semantic context or word environment, specifically of the building of syntactic-semantic argument patterns and their examples.

The emergence of new or renewed ideas in a system or amphysystem that propose and are the object of action for its implementation may lead to relevant changes within it. Occasionally, it is about the impulse and nuance of already existing ideas whose success will depend on their ability to condition systemic activity and its scope. To this end, it is not infrequent that certain dominant groups attempt to negotiate new proposals in various directions; among these is the reformulation of the proposed concepts and ideas as part of the existing and status quo or the limi-tation of the scope of those proposals to positions and functions that do not threaten their centrality. In this case, this was the reality of the reception of the magazine Vida Gallega, representative and, above all, a journalistic mo-del of that centrality, to the publication of Nacionalismo Gallego. Nuestra afirmación regional, by Antonio Villar Ponte. The text analyzes the logic of the proposals and the first debate, which takes place given the already relevant position of Antonio Villar Ponte and the framework of si-tuation conducive to the consideration of regionalism/na-tionalism in Galicia, its dimensions and intended effects. It is these circumstances that explain why Villar Ponte and the Irmandades were able to place Galicanship as central to the Galician amphysystem and why sectors such as those represented by Vida Gallega had to take them in-to account, even incorporating, in the future, elements of the proposed new Galicanship. That logic still works as a substrate in today’s Galicia.

Towards a usage-based characterisation of the English Superlative Object Construction
Bouso, Tamara
Universidade de Santiago de Compostela. Departamento de Filoloxía Inglesa e Alemá
Superlative Object Construction
Intensifying comparative construction
Frequency
Productivity
Distribution
Little attention has been paid to the English Superlative Object Construction (SOC), as in "She worked her hardest". The historical grammarians Jespersen (1909–1949) and Poutsma (1904–1929) are the only ones who do touch on the SOC, and they do so in passing relying on what seem to be the prototypical examples of the construction. This empirical evidence, though valuable for a first characterisation of the pattern, is insufficient to provide a detailed analysis of the form, function, frequency, and distribution of the SOC in Present Day English from the perspective of Construction Grammar. Based on usage-based data from COCA, this paper argues that the SOC qualifies as an intensifying comparative construction. Despite being low frequent and showing a set of highly entrenched, lexicalised units (e.g., smile [X] prettiest, work [X] hardest), the SOC is relatively productive, especially in informal registers where the construction can be easily accommodated to serve emotive, phatic, and conative functions.

Virginia Woolf and Michel de Montaigne: Ethics and Aesthetics of the Literary Essay
Lojo Rodríguez, Laura María

Virginia Woolf
The Common Reader
The essay
Michel de Montaigne
Virginia Woolf’s literary essays emerge out of an eagerness to communicate a self at odds with its own time, rejecting ideological assumptions present in her contemporaries’ critical practice. Woolf’s reformulation articulates itself as a return to the humble origins of the essay as form, which she acknowledged to appear embodied in Michel de Montaigne’s Essais (1580). The present paper aims to explore the ethics of subversion which underpin Woolf’s criticism and her conception of the literary essay, along with the aesthetics which its form presents
as promulgated by its “modern” inventor, from Woolf’s first reception of the
Frenchman’s essayist to her own first collection of criticism, The Common Reader (1925).

War Thoughts from the Periphery: Contemporary Perspectives
Lojo Rodríguez, Laura María

Relatos de escritoras contemporáneas
Xiaolu Guo
Sheena Wilkinson
Historia
Fantasma transgeneracional
This article aims at critically examining the contemporary urge to overcome taboos, silence and amnesia both in private and public
history as a result of participation in the “Great War” in order to exorcise the transgenerational phantom which continues to haunt the
present. To do so, I here examine two contemporary short stories published in the wake of centennial commemorations of the Great War
in 2014, Sheena Wilkinson’s “Each Slow Dusk” and Xiaolu Guo’s “Coolies”. These stories articulate from different angles and perspectives
women’s necessity to settle accounts with their own family history and with a traumatic inheritance which has been silenced. Unlike
many war veterans whose participation in the war was acknowledged by proper mourning and public rituals, the protagonists of Guo
and Wilkinson’s stories were deprived of recognition and their participation was silenced within the family and by official amnesia.
The political position of Northern Ireland as part of the British Empire is overtly explored in Wilkinson’s depiction of the country’s
adherence to the First World War in her short story “Each Slow Dusk”, where the protagonist sees her dreams of entering Queen’s College
in Belfast abruptly put to an end when her shell-socked brother returns from the Somme in 1916. In “Coolies”, British-Chinese writer
Xiaolu Guo brings to the fore the participation of 100,000 Chinese peasants– or kulis – recruited by the British army to dig European
trenches, addressing a topic which already challenges received conceptions of the conflict as a European drama.

Carson McCullers was deeply aware of the guilt of southern whites with respect to the oppression of blacks, and her fiction presents an intricate web of different configurations of the racial problem in her native South. In The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter she paints a very sympathetic and complex portrait of an African American man, a Martin Luther King avant la lettre. He actively fights for the civil rights of his race, yet paradoxically his obsessive blackness draws him close to the whiteness that oppresses him. In The Member of the Wedding McCullers connects racial oppression with gender oppression in the context of the prejudice of the reactionary South of the 1940s, linking the failed desire for gender fluidity with a similarly failed desire for racial hybridity. In Clock without Hands she brings existentialist influences to bear on the attitudes of her white characters with respect to the violent racial relations at the outset of the civil rights movement, and explores the tragic consequences here, for both whites and blacks, of polarized conceptions of blackness and whiteness.
raciales extremas.

Through the Eye of a Postmodernist Child: Ian McEwan’s "Homemade”

McEwan
Homemade
Childhood
Short Story
Postmodernism
From Romanticism onwards, childhood was constructed as an alternative to the alienating world of modern progress. Though this idealised version of childhood consecrated in Romantic literature was questioned by the end of the nineteenth century, the child’s perspective on the adult world has remained throughout a useful way of exploring social deficiencies and of exposing some of its most unpalatable aspects. In the present essay, the authors trace the transformation in the conception of childhood to then focus on Ian McEwan’s “Homemade”, the opening story in First Love, Last Rites (1975), the collection that marks the author’s literary debut. The particularly evil nature of the child protagonist as well as his frustrated passage into adulthood after his pathetic first and single sexual experience (the rape of his own sister) is related to the major historical transformation of the traditional model of paternal authority in the postmodern period which engenders a cynical and perverse type of subjectivity that is nevertheless marked by its paradoxical inability to enjoy.

Loss

Minor complementizer
Secondary grammaticalization
Competition
For. . .to-infinitive
This article examines the development of the subordinators till and until as minor complementizers in the Late Middle English and Early Modern English periods. An analysis of data obtained from a number of sources shows that till/until underwent a process of secondary grammaticalization, emerging as complementizers introducing clauses governed by the desiderative predicate long. The findings further suggest that the use of till/until-clauses with long was the result of a process of lexical diffusion from the semantically related pattern think (it) long till/until-clause (in the sense of ‘to seem or appear long, to be wearisome (to a person) (until something happens)’). In Late Modern English, till/until-clauses following long were lost and replaced by competing patterns with to-infinitives and for. . .to-infinitives, the latter emerging at the time as a new complement type. The article discusses the motivations and broader implications of the obsolescence of till/until-complements, which failed to spread to other members of the class of verbs of “desire,” such as desire, thirst, or yearn, and thus remained at the margins of the English system of complementation
