Politicisation Persists and Is Increasing in European Public Service Media in the Digital Society
Fernández Lombao, Tania; Blasco Blasco, Olga; Campos Freire, Francisco
The open conclusions with which Hallin and Mancini (2004, 2011) approached their comparative study of Western media systems, initiated in 1998, retain their empirical, revisionist, and prospective value—even from critical perspectives—after a quarter of a century of profound historical, social, and technological changes. The names given to the three traditional media models in those authors’ first publication are used in this article to compare the evolution of funding, audience shares, governance, structure, and political intervention in European countries’ public service media on the one hand, and to contrast the operational hypothesis that politicisation persists and is increasing in European public service media in their adaptation to the digital society, on the other hand. Based on the variables from Hallin and Mancini’s empirical model, five crucial questions about the evolution of public service media in the EU are addressed: intervention and development of regulation by states and by the European Commission in the area of shared powers; a comparative analysis of the funding systems and consumer audiences of each European country’s public service media; the changes in the governance and management structures of said public service media; the variation in the professional culture and the rational-legal authority of their organisations; and the evolution and legitimation of public service media’s public value in the internet society, as well as the persistence or mutability of the national media systems’ fit within Hallin and Mancini’s three original models.

What changes have affected the definition of the boundaries of journalism in the last decade? How do technologies influence the boundaries of journalism? Are threats and opportunities identified in those blurred areas of journalism? The aim of this book is to answer these questions and to address, from different perspectives, the redefinition of the boundaries of journalism according to the most recent changes in digital media concerning actors, models, and practices.
More than 40 authors from eleven countries contribute to this book, which is structured into six sections to analyze the principles of journalism today, sustainability strategies in the digital context, old and new actors, formats and narratives, adaptation to the mobile scenario and to social platforms, and the changes introduced by artificial intelligence. Undoubtedly, this book is of interest to both academics and professionals, as well as a crucial reference for scholars and students of media and journalism.

Open and commercial tools to generate a digital interactive story in journalism: systematic review and features analysis
Vázquez Herrero, Jorge; Otero-González, Iván
The constant technological advances are transferred to the area of journalism with signi!cant contributions to the production of innovative formats adapted to the multimedia, interactive and multiplatform scenario. Since interactive narrative journalism is one of the trends of digital journalism, it is necessary to approach the o"er of services that facilitate the journalistic creation of dynamic and interactive journalistic contents. The main objective is to analyze web programs and applications for the creation and publication of interactive digital narratives. Based on the PRISMA systematic review methodology, a total of 15 programs and web applications were identi!ed after reading 28 articles and examination of 54 webpages with value in interactive digital journalism. Five are open-source applications, which invite the community to continue developing improvements that make these tools innovative and adaptable to future changes. Our study reveals the highly valued functionalities, such as the capacity for data analysis and teamwork, among others that allow the integration of 360° multimedia, the management of the interaction map, the preview in di"erent output formats, such as tablet or mobile. However, there is a lack of journalistic roles in these tools that let them coordinate and optimise the publication process to produce the !nal news.
