dc.description.abstract | The goal of this essay is to analyze Austen’s writing — concretely Sense and Sensibility (1811) — in order to present a broad analysis of the theme of courtship and marriage in Jane Austen’s popular fiction, with a specific focus on how her characters are affected by and respond to the pressures of the so-called “marriage market” that had developed prior to the publication of Austen’s novels and the ways in which her writing clearly reflects the predominant socio-domestic philosophy of late eighteenth century Britain. |
