edad, sexo, carrera universitaria, curso, vacunación actual y previa, pertenencia a colectivos
160 (79,6%) pertenecían a
Background: University students, in particular those who study Medicine and Nursing and are carrying out their training at health centres, are in contact with the most vulnerable population, and that is why discovering the motivations and barriers that move them either to get vaccinated or not may help improve vaccination coverage. Methodology: The present paper is a transversal descriptive study pretending to asses the anti-influenza vaccination coverage of the university population in the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) along the vaccinating campaign 2019/2020, as well as the reasons and barriers involved in it. Responses were obtained through an on-line anonymous questionnaire filled out by students from different Faculties in which different variables such as age, sex, degree, academic year, current and previous vaccinations, priority groups membership and reasons and barriers whether to get vaccinated or not were included. The statistic analysis was carried out by using Chi squared tests, binary logistical regression, Cochran for k related samples and McNemar with Bonferroni corrections. Results: 201 students took part, 155 women (77,1%) and 46 men (22,9%). 126 of them were enrolled in Medicine (62,7%), 44 in Nursing (21,4%) and 32 in other academic degrees (15,9%). 107 of them (53,2%) got vaccinated in the current campaign and 88 (43,8%) did it in previous ones. 160 (79,6%) belonged to priority groups and 139 of these last ones (86,9%) were currently training at a healthcare centre. Male sex, previous anti-influenza vaccinations and training at a healthcare centre became statistically significant predictors of vaccination. The most relevant reasons as to move to vaccinating were mainly civic responsibility, confidence in the efficacy of the vaccine, and working, belonging and coexisting with people included in groups of risk. As to not get vaccinated the most statistically significant reasons and barriers were never becoming infected, considering it not necessary, lack of information and problems with timetables. Conclusion: Either detected motivations and barriers proved out to be a determining factor in the individual decision to whether vaccinating or not. It is necessary to delve into them in order to deal with the vaccination campaigns in a more effective way. |
